It’s a Banner Day

by Julie Hirt

Made a couple of buntings for my niece and nephew last night and this morning. I was surprised how quickly they come together.

My nephew is getting ready to hit 3rd grade and wants Jayhawk items and colors for his room.  Good choice, Owen. Red and blue, K-U, Rockchalk!

The KU bunting was made using leftover fabrics from the Bean Bags.

This pink and purple bunting is for my niece who is four.  I used pale floral fabrics leftover from quilting projects.

Total cost = $0. I like that.   Triangles from both projects are about 8″ wide and 9″ tall.

AND….   **drumroll**

I got 3rd in Love By Hand’s Christmas in July sewing challenge.  Woot, woot!!

Can’t wait to receive my goodies. Muahahaha!

I have a lot of projects I’m wanting to get done so this weekend I’ll be in sewing frenzy mode.   Catch ya later –

  1. Congratulations! It’s an awesome pillow. :)

  2. Congrats! You earned it with your beautiful pillow! Do you have a tutorial that you used to make the buntings or did you just do it from memory. I am hoping to make some, but I am not sure how to go about it.

    • This was the first time I’ve made one – this is what I did:

Make a triangle template by cutting a piece of paper into a rectangle about the height & width you’d prefer – fold it in half length wise. Unfold it – From the bottom crease fold draw a line up to the opposite corner. Do this on both sides. Then you’ll have a nice little template to cut from. Be sure to add 1/4″ on each of the sides (NOT the top) for seam allowance.

Take 2 pieces of fabric (front and back of bunting fabrics) place right sides together. Sew up both sides, not the top edge. Turn right side out and iron. You may need to poke the triangle tip with something to get it pointy.

Make as many as you want.

Then take double fold binding and start sewing it all together. Just stuff the raw, unsewn edge in the fold of the bais. I left a couple feet of binding on each side so it could be tied to something.

      Hope that makes sense!

  3. Cute buntings! Congrats on the win :)
