Thursday Threads 10/10

by Julie Hirt

What is Thursday Threads?  A weekly link up to share your quilting, sewing, crochet, tutorial, stash or any thread related project.  Anything goes!

Do you ever get that ho-hum feeling about sewing?  I hit a slump.  There are a couple of quilts and other projects I have lined up to work on soon, but I just needed a tiny little break.

Taking a break can be was dangerous for me.  I found another hobby. WEAVING!  Another hobby is just what I need (heavily sarcastic).

Blame it on Instagram and all the cool weaving pictures I spied with my little eye.   After some research and a massive vocabulary lesson in weaving, I decided on a 24″ Kromski Harp Rigid Heddle Loom.  I chose that model because it was a decent price, easy to put together and there are lots of videos available online on how to use it.

My first project:

I jumped right in and started playing around with cottons with no end project in mind.

It turned into a decent little placemat size thing. Not sure what I’ll do with it, but it was fun to make and I love the texture and colors.

Weaving is so fascinating to me. I think it’s because I love fiber, texture and just making things.  There are endless possibilities!

I have a lot of yarn from my crochet days, which aren’t really over, and weaving is a great way to use up some of that yarn.  Currently on the loom is a blue and gray scarf-to-be.

Anyone weave?  Any tips?  I think I’m ready to start playing with some patterns and designs outside of the basic weave.

Enough of my babble… let’s check out some links from last week:

  1. your placemat is amazing!!! I think you need to make 3 more or however many people are in your family and use them. I love the pattern you made and the colors. I have more hobbies than time and completely understand what you are saying but weaving is so useful (as is sewing, and embroidery, and scrapping, and card making, etc, etc!!

  2. What a beautiful placemat, Julie! Wow – a new hobby! Good for you. I have no advice, but I am sure you will dig in and make all kinds of discoveries!

  3. The weavin does look like fun!

  4. Loving the weaving Julie. There are a few ladies at my Guild who weave ….think I might try joining their monthly meeting after seeing your lovely work. Fabulous projects from last week. Thank you for hosting the linky party.

  5. I’ve only finished 2 table runners and 3 scarves so far, but I’m still enamored with plain weave and color and weave. i really want to do some pooling scarves with handpainted yarn but i haven’t figured out the warp placement yet.

congrats on your harp! i got a 15″ cricket and i already want a wider width loom.

  6. Wow! Weaving, that is something I’ve never done before! Great job! Thanks for hosting Julie!

  7. OOOOh! That looks so cool. I love the colors in the placemat together. It is dangerous starting a new hobby. I knew a girl that already quilted and went to check out a scrapbook shop and immediatley turned around and left. She apologized to the clerk and left saying she just could not handle another hobby that hoards things like this:) At least you are using some supplies you already have.

  8. Woah!!! That is seriously amazing! I love the colors and the pattern on your little placemat!

  9. I sometimes need a break from quilting and took up wool stitching….so I smile when you started weaving…. thanks for the linky party.

  10. I love love love your weaving. I took a weaving class over 30 years ago and keep resisting the temptation to jump back in.

  11. Sometimes I appreciate a diversion too! I used to knit quite a but haven’t picked up the needles for awhile. I think it would be fun to weave. Your first project is quite lovely. It would as you suggested make a great place mat. Love the choice of colors! It seems as though quilters usually have another passion too! I am seeing more spinning and weaving lately! I will be looking forward to seeing what other creative item/s you will be making! P.S. Thanks for your weekly linky part too! :)

  12. Love the blue and orange one especially. Have fun at the lake!

  13. Wow julie! weaving! That is so cool. I love the placemat you made. I can’t wait to see the scarf. I saw someone at the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair last year weaving on a triangle , it was going to be a shawl. Gorgeous.
Thank you so much for sharing my Aquarius star quilt. Have fun weaving.

  14. And thanks for hosting thursday threads Julie!

  15. Just saw your Lattice Bones quilt in the Moda Bakeshop, and wanted to tell you it’s adorable!

  16. I have always thought about trying weaving. There is a shop about a mile from my house that has big looms you can rent and it is filled to the brim with beautiful supplies. My will power has held out so far. Love the orange and turquoise!

  17. Man! That is SO cool! I tried a knitting machine once and was totally digging on it until I couldn’t figure out how to change colors. :)

  18. Your colors are beautiful! My dad just started weaving with an inkle loom (belts/straps/webbing of narrow width) with cotton embroidery thread and carpet warp. You’re right it has endless creative possibilities and it’s very different from sewing. I recommend looking for a weaver’s group or guild near you. That way you can learn from more experience weavers and share appreciation for each other’s work in-person. After watching him work, I’m getting motivated to take it up too.

  19. Love your placemat.. Weaving looks so fun!! I finally had to eliminate some of the crafts that I have tried in the past. I have tried most everything from tole painting to beading and clay molding to flower arranging. A few years ago I had to downsize so I sold most of my supplies ( I was told I had a craft store in my house). Quilting is my love right now. I recently reorganized my stash using the comic book boards and it is amazing how inspired I am by my stash. I am currently making a scrappy Irish chain quilt (king size) for my son and daughter-in-law. Love your blog!!

  20. Thank you for the Shout Out! Moving X and + quilt to the top of the to do’s :)

  21. Your woven placemat is simply gorgeous!
