Countdown to Christmas Advent Calendar

by Julie Hirt

Yikes!  I almost didn’t get this made in time.  Finished it up this weekend and I’ll be delivering it to my niece and nephews this evening.

The pockets are stuffed with little goodies.  I used a Riley Blake charm pack for the pockets and some bright solids for the interior.

I tried something different for the quilting by using different colors of threads.  It’s okay, not sure I would it would be worth it on a printed fabric.

Since I waited so long to finish this up I purchased backing and binding fabric at Joann’s.  It goes pretty well with the Riley Blake fabrics.

Machine binded for the first time (I always hand sew it on the back) and it’s pretty terrible. ha!  Definitely need to practice.

Janice at Better of Thread hosted a Quilt-Along.  I’m just sorry I didn’t get mine finished in time for the party!

  6. It’s so sweet! I love the quilting detail. I’m sure your niece and nephews will love it. The advent calendar was one of my favorite things about Christmas when I was a kid.
I actually tried sewing one this year but didn’t get my act in gear early enough. Since I was rushing, it wasn’t turning out the way I envisioned, so I abandoned it.

  7. What a thoughtful gift! We have used ours for the past 3 years; I’m sure your niece and nephew will love it for years!

  8. It looks wonderful! What a great project to practice machine binding on. I machine bound a quilt for myself and it came out pretty terrible but once I threw it on the bed I realized you can only see if you look closely so it’s totally a flaw I can live with on that .

  9. Looks great! And don’t worry you’re not alone in the not having it finished for the QAL, mines not finished either :)
