Oh My Stars: Quilt Progress

by Julie Hirt

Hope you enjoyed your holidays and got to spend a lot of time with family and friends.  I’ve been quiet due to holiday sewing but I’m back in the swing of things.

My nephew will be getting a ‘big boy’ bed in the next few weeks and I to make him a twin size quilt.  I’ve decided on a star quilt using 3 star patterns from the Oh My Stars! QAL.

The Diamond Heart

Chevron Star stars (6)

And the Quattro Stagioni Star, which I think is my favorite to make.

I’m using a mix of blue fabrics for the stars and black and white prints for the background.

I was able to get all of these made today – I LOVE VACATION!   They are 12″ blocks so I’m thinking 30 blocks (5 by 6) will be big enough for toddler in a twin bed.

Yesterday my husband and I did a little hunting at River Market Antiques.  It’s a large, awesome, 4 story building that is insane for treasure-hunting in downtown KC.  I picked up a vintage feedsack quilt top and aran afghan. I’ll definitely be sharing some pictures of those.

Oh! I also made my brother a t-shirt quilt for Christmas. It was all of his USMC shirts and cammies from his military years. I’m really happy with how it turned out.  No good pictures yet because of the snowy mess (and it was a secret), but I want to post about that soon.

Enjoy your New Year’s Eve and be safe!

  2. Cute! I see you subscribe to the same theory I do: directional prints don’t have to be strictly directional in patchwork. :)

  3. This is a great project Julie. I really like the color scheme of your stars! Lucky you can visit the market! Happy New Year!

  4. Gorgeous stars! That will make such a beautiful quilt! I think my favourite is the one with the bird background!

  5. Love those stars!! Can’t wait to see this one all done, it’s going to be glorious!

  6. Love your fabrics. That is one large quilt for a toddler, he will be able to use it for a long time to come.

  7. Such a cute and happy quilt, love the different stars. I have been to KC at least once a year for 20 yrs and have never been to the Antique market, think a trip is in order.

  8. I love the blues and greens in your stars. I especially love the low volume/value fabrics you’ve used. I have such a hard time finding (buying) neutral fabrics-I think I’m going to have to make that a priority for 2014.

  9. Nice job on the cute stars

  10. Stars looking great! You can’t beat light blue for color choice…I like all the different scraps

  11. Love each of these blocks, especially the use of waterfront park!

  12. Love your stars with the low volume background! I need to branch out and attempt using the low volume fabrics. Love it!

  13. Love your cool colored stars and the background too. I’ve just started mine. Going with warm brights from yellow to violet with a black and white polka dot background.
