by Julie Hirt

Gray and yellow baby quilt is finished!   So, hip hop hooray… ho… hey… ho…

I’m really happy with how it turned out. This quilt is for a friend who will be gifting it at a baby shower.

The colors requested were gray and yellow but we needed a pattern.  After looking through pictures for inspiration, I found this.  Perfect.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

I used a rotating mat for the first time and loved using it.  Curious to see what else I will use it for.  The mat is great for trimming up the half square triangles.

After learning about THIS*, the HST size possibilities are endless!

*TIP: Rather than dry erase, use washi tape. It stays put if you are cutting multiples.  Plus, it’s pretty and I’m always looking for reasons to bust out the washi.

I’d make a larger one for myself if I didn’t already have a dozen ‘up next’ ideas in my head.

  1. It’s like sunshine on a cloudy day. Very sweet.

  2. I love it! I just finished one like this in browns/golds/greens and had so much fun making it. It was easy and they look stunning when completed. Very nice quilt!

  3. Love it! I love my rotating mat too, perfect for these. I want to try that trimming method, seems a lot easier! Quilt in a day has a special ruler for it that I might try to snag with a coupon when I get one:) You totally have that song running through my head….lol.

  4. It turned out great! Perfect, yet non-traditional, choice for a baby quilt. It’s hard to beat a HST quilt.

  5. Beautiful job on the quilt …..love it!

  6. Love your quilt – so striking and modern! Love the colors, too. Your post on trimming HSTs couldn’t have been timed more perfectly. I just read about the QIAD special HST trimming ruler on another blog and I searched for it at Joann’s and on Amazon with no luck. However, I just recently bought a square ruler with a diagonal line so it’s SO COOL to know that I can quickly trim up any size HST without having a special ruler! Love the washi tape idea, too. Thanks for a great post and congrats on a beautiful finish. :)

  7. HI Julie, I am from your Scrappy bee, love the quilt. and the tip, I hate HST, but need to broaden my creative side. I cant seem to find the 21/2 ruler, where did you get one, I cant find me one

  8. Gorgeous quilt! And thanks for the HST tip. I love making HST’s and I’ve never once thought about trimming them before opening them! Off to give it a try!

  14. I’ve been tempted by those rotating cutting mats but always wondered (like you) what ELSE I would use them for. They sure do look handy though :) Cute quilt too!
