Stars Quilt

by Julie Hirt

My nephew, Cole,  is getting his first twin size bed so I had to finish it up. This quilt has been a work in progress for a while.

Originally I planned on making like 30 stars.  That was just not going to happen.  Adding the borders definitely helped make this a finish.

Measures: 62″ x 86″ – the length is huge for me!

Yesterday was a bright, sunny, 70 degree day.  Today?  35, windy and snowy.  Thank you Kansas.

I used a combo of 3 different star patterns from the Oh My Stars! QAL from Thought and Found.  This is the Quattro Stagioni.

Chevron Star pattern is here.

And the Dimaond-Hearted Star.  You can find an assortment of her star patterns here.

I am soooo happy with the quilting and how it turned out.  Super crinkle love.

This is the first time I’ve quilted circles and definitely want to do more of them. I love the look of quilted pebbles and that’s still intimidating, so this is a step in the right direction.

I used my trusty Aurifil 50 wt in white for piecing and most of the quilting, and 50 wt in medium blue for the straight line border quilting.

The interior blocks I did a wiggle shape changing directions every 3″ or so.  I used the blocks as a grid.

I really wish you could touch the crinkly-ness through a screen.   The process is definitely worth the effort.

Someone help me get into true free motion where I can go all over randomly.  For some reason I still need a defined area and order or it freaks me out.  Feathers? Puh-lease. Terrifying!

The backing is WideScreen by Carolyn Friedlander. It may be the only backing I ever use again.  The pattern is fun, it comes in multiple colors, and doesn’t require piecing.

Instagram friends:  Thank you so much for putting up with all of my updates on this one!

Has anyone finished a true Oh My Stars! quilt?  The stars take a lot more time that I thought they would.  I admire you.   Seriously, look at all of these!

I love the final look but making it could very well end my love of quilting.

Thank you for putting up with my picture heavy post!  Today wasn’t the best day to take them but I definitely got a few.

  1. Hi Julie,
this quilt is just fabulous. I love EVERYTHING about it! I’m impressed with your FMQ especially the circles – did you mark them???

I don’t know if this will help you but when I first started FMQing, I could not ignore the design of the quilt to make an all over quilt design like even meandering. I decided to try quilting a few quilts from the back and this seemed to help me concentrate on the quilting pattern (movement & proportion) without the distraction of the pieced pattern. I can now meander with top up but never never feathers! Maybe someday. . .

  2. It turned out so great! I love all the different stars and blues–but especially that aqua herringbone fabric! You’re doing fantastic on the FMQ, for sure you’ll be ready for feathers within a year (or less!). 😉

  3. I love this quilt! I know you weren’t 100% sure about the borders but I hope you’re happy with the result because it’s so perfect! What a super nice auntie you are!

  4. Julie, you did a beautiful job on this quilt…wow, I love the colors and your quilting…it really speaks to me!

  6. I love it!!! What a great finish! The colors are great and such a wonderful gift! I’m sure he will love it too.

I can’t help with FMQ. I can’t for the life of me make a large pattern. I always want to do really dense quilting. One day, I’ll figure myself out!

  7. Absolutely perfect! I still can’t believe that this is the first time you’ve quilted circles! They’re amazing! And i’m with you on the widescreens, i love not having to piece the back!

  8. I love the borders. The quilting is awesome. Nice finish!

  12. I have been FM Quilting for some time and mine looks like ameobas. I put on some good music and let my needle dance. This year I hope to try circles and peebles.

  13. Have you seen Leah Day’s FMQ fillers? They always start with a predefined area! And they are some of the most beautiful designs for FMQ I have seen. If you haven’t had a chance yet, go to freemotionquilting.blogspot.com and check out the different designs & tutorials.

  14. I love the mixture of different star patterns, they look great together!

  17. Those circles look amazing…you have to be a natural! It is hard for me to just do an allover design too, but when I see them they always look great. It’s like coloring outside the lines or something:) I am a inside the lines kinda girl!
