Thursday Threads – Halloween Edition

by Julie Hirt

Happy Halloween!   I haven’t received pictures yet from my brother and friend, whose costumes I’ve made, or I’d share them with you.  My brother’s costume is a colonial type and my friend Christina is a dalmation.  They both turned out pretty well, unfortunately I don’t have anything to share with you this week.

There were SO many great links from last week!    Here are a few that fit with the season and weather here in Kansas:

And I can’t help but share this free Cherry Blossom Marmalade block from Podunk Pretties.  They are so cute!

Thursday Threads 10/24

by Julie Hirt

Hi!  Last week was some much enjoyed time off and now I’m paying for it.  Working on Halloween costumes and getting caught up at work.  Also making time to fit in all those WINNING Chiefs games!

A big thank you to Susan at The Bored Zombie for hosting Thursday Threads last week.

Because of my Halloween sewing I don’t have much to share this week.  Maybe I’ll post the costumes next week!

What are you working on or finishing up?

Lattice Bones Quilt

by Julie Hirt

A finish!

latticebones 627handworks

The pattern was posted at Moda Bake Shop yesterday.

This quilt was one of those happy accidents that happen when you’re playing around blocks.

The fabrics are Potluck by American Jane and Moda Bella Solids in snow and mustard.

For the quilting I used my trusty Aurifil.  White (2024 in 50wt) for the front and Yellow (2135 in 50wt) for the back.

Told you I’ve been busy! Each block has 10 fabric pieces, so there was quite a bit of piecing involved.

quilt label

Recently I’ve had a couple of questions regarding my quilt tags.  I order them through Ikaprint on Etsy.   Use coupon code 627handworks for 15% off your order.   My labels are 1.75″ in navy with gray.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday Threads 10/10

by Julie Hirt

What is Thursday Threads?  A weekly link up to share your quilting, sewing, crochet, tutorial, stash or any thread related project.  Anything goes!

Do you ever get that ho-hum feeling about sewing?  I hit a slump.  There are a couple of quilts and other projects I have lined up to work on soon, but I just needed a tiny little break.

Taking a break can be was dangerous for me.  I found another hobby. WEAVING!  Another hobby is just what I need (heavily sarcastic).

Blame it on Instagram and all the cool weaving pictures I spied with my little eye.   After some research and a massive vocabulary lesson in weaving, I decided on a 24″ Kromski Harp Rigid Heddle Loom.  I chose that model because it was a decent price, easy to put together and there are lots of videos available online on how to use it.

My first project:

I jumped right in and started playing around with cottons with no end project in mind.

It turned into a decent little placemat size thing. Not sure what I’ll do with it, but it was fun to make and I love the texture and colors.

Weaving is so fascinating to me. I think it’s because I love fiber, texture and just making things.  There are endless possibilities!

I have a lot of yarn from my crochet days, which aren’t really over, and weaving is a great way to use up some of that yarn.  Currently on the loom is a blue and gray scarf-to-be.

Anyone weave?  Any tips?  I think I’m ready to start playing with some patterns and designs outside of the basic weave.

Enough of my babble… let’s check out some links from last week:

Next week Thursday Threads will be hosted at The Bored Zombie.   I’m taking a week off with my husband to enjoy some down time. We’ll probably head to the lake and do some kayaking. Maybe some camping with the dogs? Who knows where we’ll end up!

Thursday Threads 10/3

by Julie Hirt

Hope everyone is having a great week and able to squeeze in some sewing time.  This weekend I’ll be cutting into some fabrics to start a new quilt, something I’m definitely looking forward to.

It was pretty exciting last week to be posted on the Janome website. I love my machine!
