Gypsy Wife Blocks +

by Julie Hirt

I’m having a great summer, are you?  The only drawback to spending so much time outdoors is not sewing as much.  I’ve been sewing in spurts and on Saturday I got caught up on my Gypsy Wife blocks.

June:

I really like how the Crazy Anne (left, bottom corner) turned out even if my points are terrible.

My original goal was to ONLY use scraps and try not to repeat too many patterns.  I finally had to cut into my stash, but I like that I’m still using up a lot of scraps.  Now August is only a few days away and I will *not* let myself fall behind again!

This summer also ended another round of the Scrappy Trip Bee. I received some awesome blocks but unfortunately haven’t taken a picture yet.

Sign ups for the next round begin August 1st!  Check back here for details.

Amanda at the What the Bobbin has an ongoing swap of Fussy Cut blocks. <3  Here is my take on the ‘text’ theme. I didn’t realize how few text fabrics I actually have. I have quite a few small text prints, but I thought that may be kinda boring for the centers.

And… check this out!

zeppelin potholder

Teresa Down Under made a super cute potholder tutorial. I LOVE this version using my free Zeppelin paper piecing pattern.

Here is one of the reasons why my summer lacks sewing. We spend a lot of time at Lake of the Ozarks and the weather has been terrific this summer. I love spending time outdoors, especially if I’m near a body of water.

Be sure to check back in – I’ll be hosting an Aurifil giveaway soon!

Outdoorsy Birch Baby

by Julie Hirt

A friend of mine from high school recently contacted me and asked if I could make a patchwork quilt for her new son.  (So excited for her!)  She found some fabrics online that she loved and they were a variety of Birch organics (yes, she has great taste).

Using 6 half yards, 2 yards of camper fabric and 1 fat quarter of the orange bears (that print is so difficult to find),  I was able to make all of this:

The quilt is backed with Kona White and quilted in straight lines 1/4″ along each seam.

Here is the minkie backed camper blanket. I’d love one of these for myself, Birch fabrics are SO soft.

Two diaper covers.

IMG_0079

Three bibs. I got to use my new KamSnaps!

IMG_0080

Three burp cloths.

And a bear sack to hold the covers, bibs and cloths.

I literally have a handful of scraps left and that’s it.  Cheers to babies!

Charm Party Quilt & Pillow (tutorial)

by Julie Hirt

New baby quilt and pillow is finished up.

Charm Party 627handworks

Tutorial can be found here.

This set was really fun to make because it comes together pretty quickly just using a few charm packs.

I did my regular quilting pattern.  It’s kind of like a stipple but I quilt in rows so it it’s not as stressful for me.

IMG_0284

I really enjoy this fabric line from Moda; Chance of Flowers by Sandy Gervais. It’s perfect for baby quilts and would make really adorable clothes.

This is the project that got me a little behind on my Triangle Quilt Along with The Sassy Quilter.   I do have the quilt top finished and just need to somehow get it quilted  in the next few days. That way I can link up for a chance to win a prize!

Baby Clothes & Quilt Progress

by Julie Hirt

I’m not sure why I’m so into baby clothes right now, but I am.  And no, I don’t have  baby fever.  I think it’s because they come together so quickly. It’s like instant gratification and they are so cute I can’t stand it.

IMG_0320

I made another Sunny Dress by Felicity Patterns. This time I made the matching diaper cover and added some embroidery.

It’s just a stitch on my sewing machine so it was really easy.

IMG_0322

Then I made a Rose Bud Romper, also by Felicity Patterns.  This is a romper version of the Sunny Dress.   I think it’s so sweet!   It’s pretty small since I made the 3-6 months size.  This will be headed to my niece who is due to be here in May.

IMG_0314

Just waiting on my Kam Snaps order so I can add the snap buttons between the legs.  Does anyone use these?  I’ve heard good things and I’m hoping they work well.

This is one of my favorite AMH prints.    Just look at that ruffle butt!

IMG_0315

Then I remembered Big Butt Baby Pants after seeing them on blogs the past few years. So I headed to Made By Rae and purchased the pattern.

IMG_0316

This is really versatile and it’s a unisex pattern.  You can add pockets, ruffles, cuffs or even use a different print on the butt extension panel.

IMG_0318

These are 3-6 months size well and I only used a 14″ cut of WOF.

Triangle Quilt Along progress.  Got a few projects out of my way and I just need to finish up the last couple of rows to complete the top.  Hoping we don’t have plans this weekend and I can get it quilted as well.

Where are you on your Triangle quilt?  Paula gave us plenty of time but I tend to procrastinate… and make baby clothes.

Candy Flowers Pillow

by Julie Hirt

I have a new tutorial up at Moda Bake Shop.

CandyFlowers 627handworks (1)

I show my method of piecing several squares that I need to keep in a certain order and direction.  Not sure how others do it, but this works for me!

CandyFlowers 627handworks (32)

It has a simple envelope style back.   To make this pillow all you need is a couple of Mini Charm packs (or 2.5″ scraps) and 3 fat quarters.  Tutorial is here.

Hope you’re having a great weekend.

Gypsy Wife March + Fussy Cut Swap

by Julie Hirt

Here are my March blocks for the Gypsy Wife Quilt Along.

I’m forcing myself to work strictly from my scraps (I need a reason to keep them), so it’s pretty hodgepodge.

Gypsy Wife March

A little rant…  If I’m going to be honest, I have to say this quilt pattern is kicking my ass.   The block sizes are for ‘finished’ blocks, which I could care less about.  I really need to know the size the blocks should be when I’m making them.  After it’s all put together, I don’t really care what size they are (finished).  The pattern seems to jump all around and I just can’t follow it very well. Hmph.

That being said, I think it’s totally worth doing because the end result looks insanely awesome.  I’m sure other people can follow this pattern perfectly; my brain just doesn’t mesh with this one.  I will say, it’s definitely making me think.

pershing

The Pershing block may be my favorite so far.  It was really fun picking out the fabrics.

Fussy Cut!  I love this swap.  It’s hosted with Amanda at What the Bobbin and I believe it will be an ongoing monthly swap with different themes.

fussy fox (2)

The theme was woodland. I may have missed the mark a little but fox live in the woods!  Probably not *these* fancy fox, but still.

fussy fox (3)

I think they look dapper.

I’m also participating in a really fun Birthday Bash Swap with Stephanie at Quarter Incher.  I’m the first recipient and it’s freaking FANTASTIC!  I’m blown away by the generosity. I’ll have a separate post with all of those goodies.

Let’s see, what else…

  • Just finished up a small project for Moda Bakeshop and have another to work on. I think they’ll be published in April.
  • My design wall is –blank–.  Woot!  Which quilt to make next? I have a few ideas.
  • I need to make the April Birthday Girl her present.
  • Need to quilt a top I made last year, that I’m just not feeling.
  • Oh!  I still need to make my Scrappy Trip blocks for my hive. Yikes
  • A wall flag thing for my brother…

The list goes on but I’ll stop there.

So what are you working on?  Did you anything fun for Spring Break?
