A Quilt Finish! Equally Fancy

by Julie Hirt

I love this line of fabric! It’s called Fancy by Lily Ashbury for Moda. There are so many great stash builders in here.

When I first started quilting I had a jelly roll and didn’t know what to do with it. I liked the look of the rail fence but not the jumbled-ness with all of the fabrics. I realized using white gave it a crisp and clean look that I liked.

The first version I made was back in 2010 and I called it Big Whimsy, it was the 3rd quilt I made.

When I was thinking of ideas for the Bake Shop, I remembered Big Whimsy.  It’s beginner friendly and uses 2 jelly rolls so I put together a quick tutorial.

It’s such a simple, basic block but I really enjoy it.

This is also the first quilt I finished up on my newly acquired longarm.  I was soooo freakin nervous and now I have an overall better feeling for the machine and it’s not so scary.  The pattern I tried is kind of a swirl then echo it a few times, then swirl and echo, repeat.  Eventually I got in the flow and it went fairly well. I love the final texture!

Kind of hard to get pictures of the quilting, but there it is.

Next week I’ll be heading out of town for a few weeks (Bahamas, here we come!) but I do plan on getting quite a few things crossed off my to-do list when I return.

  1. What a great finish! I like the way the white makes the rails float on the quilt, and that quilting is beautiful! I am glad you were able to get a photograph of it.

    Have fun in the Bahamas!

  2. Great job, Julie! I saw this on the Bake Shop and loved it. Congrats on the long arm. Are you hoping to do others’ quilts, in time?

  3. GTFO! You have a longarm now? No fair! *throws tantrum*
Seriously, congrats, Jules. I’m so jealous, but can’t wait to see what you do with it! And, I hate you so much right now.
