These dreams are THAT good

by Julie Hirt

Ahh… Lavender sachet’s.  I didn’t plan on blogging about these, but what the hey.

IMG_0618

A few weeks ago I started using lavender spray* on my sheets.  I’ve never used it before and the last two weeks I’ve had massively vivid dreams that I actually remember.  It’s kind of crazy and I think it’s from the lavender. Thoughts on that?

Since I’ve become addicted to the scent at bedtime, I decided to make a sachet for my pillow (ie: lay sachet directly on my face!).

There are oodles of cute examples on Flickr and I’m sure you can figure out how to make these, but here’s what I did:

Materials
Dried lavender
Two 4″ squares of linen or other loosely woven material
4″ Decorative ribbon
Optional: Ribbon for hanging

  • Attach decorative ribbon to a square by stitching down each side of the ribbon.
  • Place the two linen squares together, right sides facing.
  • Optional: Fold your 2nd ribbon in half and place between the two squares.  The bulk of it between the squares; raw edges of all pieces face out.
  • Sew a 1/4″ seam all the way round leaving a 1″ hole for turning.
  • Turn it right side out and fill with lavender.
  • Hand stitch the hole closed.

*Lavender spray. Make your own because it’s waaaaaay freaking cheaper than buying it.  There are tons of variations out there on the interwebs.  Basically you mix 10  drops of essential oil with a tablespoon of vodka or rubbing alcohol (these mix with the oil, while water doesn’t).  Then mix with about a cup of water.  There you go. Cheap linen spray. You can make bigger batches and adjust the drops to your preference.

I purchased my dried lavender and the ribbons on Etsy.  Etsy is my weakness.

Hope my family likes lavender.  The 3 cups I bought will probably make a dozen of these.

It’s a Banner Day

by Julie Hirt

Made a couple of buntings for my niece and nephew last night and this morning. I was surprised how quickly they come together.

IMG_0438

My nephew is getting ready to hit 3rd grade and wants Jayhawk items and colors for his room.  Good choice, Owen. Red and blue, K-U, Rockchalk!

The KU bunting was made using leftover fabrics from the Bean Bags.

IMG_0446

This pink and purple bunting is for my niece who is four.  I used pale floral fabrics leftover from quilting projects.

Total cost = $0. I like that.   Triangles from both projects are about 8″ wide and 9″ tall.

AND….   **drumroll**

I got 3rd in Love By Hand’s Christmas in July sewing challenge.  Woot, woot!!

Can’t wait to receive my goodies. Muahahaha!

I have a lot of projects I’m wanting to get done so this weekend I’ll be in sewing frenzy mode.   Catch ya later –

Christmas in July – Kaleidoscope Pillow

by Julie Hirt

Finished in the nick of time!  The Christmas challenge at Love By Hand ends today.  My entry is a kaleidoscope pillow.

With so many different scraps I love how colorful it is. I don’t even think there is a repeat fabric!

Love By Hand

kaleidoscope pillow (3)

I hand quilted the front of this using different color threads between the blocks.

kaleidoscope pillow (6)

Since it’s a gift (can’t say who, in case they are reading) I wanted a secure zipper back and included a half inch of flange.

kaleidoscope pillow (5)

And I couldn’t forget my little label.  I still think it’s neat to see my name on something! (coupon 627handworks for 15% off!)

After seeing kaleidoscope pillows from Rita at Red Pepper Quilts and Stephanie at Quarter Incher I had to make one.

kaleidoscope pillow (2)

Now I’m making a kaleidoscope quilt.  The pattern is different and I hope it turns out just as bright.

Oh!  I know I’ve mentioned this before but I always keep an eye out for clearance sheets.

kaleidoscope pillow (7)
They are perfect for pillow linings because you can get them cheap and at the same time add an interesting pop of color.

Now I need to fold it up and store it with my Christmas items so I don’t forget I made it!  Hope she likes it :)

Did you have an entry in the challenge?  Have you created anything using a kaleidoscope pattern?

Store Patterns Now Available

by Julie Hirt

This is a first but I’ve put up a couple of patterns over at Craftsy.

argyle

I do have Free Paper Piecing templates available and plan to keep adding to those after the Block Rock’n series is complete (only 2 more!).

thirdwheel

Since I’m in a few quilting bees I’d like to try and offset some of the shipping costs.   I love having quilting bee members overseas, but I don’t love the cost of mailing a tiny little block!

scrapmedley

This Scrap Medley pattern is great for using up scraps.  I made a pillow top strictly out of my scrap pile.  It won’t break the bank at $1.

snowman

I think I may have a little holiday series with the snowman above, Rudolph and something else.  Simple pattern you make to your size.

You can access these at anytime by clicking “Pattern Store” from the link at the top of my page or in the sidebar.

Hope you are having a fantastic Monday – see you for Thursday Threads!

Tutorial: Free Motion Quilting Modern Petals

by Julie Hirt

I came up with this design when trying to attempt Dogwood/Orange Peel quilting and mine was just looking too sloppy.

modernpetals

Patchwork squares make this an easy pattern, so it works well for the Scrappy Trip, Postage Stamp or Scrap Vomit quilts.

modernpetals (16)

Here we go:

Pretend my drawn lines are patchwork pieces.  Just use your blocks as a grid pattern.

modernpetals (2)

Step 1:   Quilt a straight line up between 2 blocks

modernpetals (3)

Step 2:   Curve up and around to the left corner

modernpetals (4)

Step 3:   Swing down and around to the upper right corner creating a half circle

modernpetals (5)

Step 4:   Curve back down to the middle

modernpetals (6)

Repeat:  Steps 1 – 4 all the way up your row.

TIP:  I don’t have my petal tips reach the points of the corners.  This way there is a little spacing between the rows.

Now, I’ll show you how on the machine.  Use your free motion foot, feet down and draw your thread up.

modernpetals (7)

Straight line up

modernpetals (8)

Curve up to the corner

modernpetals (9)

Half circle around to the other corner

modernpetals (10)

Curve back down

modernpetals (11)

When you get to the top of your quilt you can just reverse these steps and work your way back down.

This is a simple pattern and depending on the size of your squares, it can get really crinkly in the wash!

Here is the Scrappy Trip  quilted with ‘Modern Petals’.

Something Old, Something New & Giveaway Winner

by Julie Hirt

My entry for the Something Old, Something New Challenge at Quilty Creations.

oldnew

I have a bunch of vintage sheets so I cut some into 2″ squares and stitched them up.  Made and quilted with Aurifil Mako 50 wt in white.  Measures 9″ x 5″ standing with 1″ boxed corners.

It’s sitting on an old cotton chenille bedspread my Aunt Arlyn gave me.  It was used on her daughters bed 30+ years ago.

Now, onto the good stuff!  The winner of the Giveaway is….
