Paganelli Jelly Roll Race

by Julie Hirt

I made this Jelly Roll Race quilt for my mom last year and forgot to take pictures before I gave it to her.  It’s one of my favorites; I love this fabric collection!

The fabric is Flower Power by Jennifer Paganelli.  I found 2 of these jelly rolls on ebay last year (they are really hard to find) and bought them both.  I’m hoarding the other roll until I find *the* pattern.

Jelly Roll Race quilts come together so fast and I love the patchwork look they make.  42 strips make a super throw size quilt.

The backing is a Denise Schmidt fabric – it’s like the most perfect orange. I wish I had bought more of it when it was available.  The binding is a Kona solid.

Since it was for my mom I embroidered a little quilt label onto it.

To make the Jelly Roll Race quilt I used this method.  Here are the basic steps:

  1. Take a jelly roll set and sew each strip end to end.  You’ll have a super long (140 feet!) 2.5″ strip of fabric.
  2. Cut 18″ off one end so it will be offset (thanks lattegirl40!)
  3. Grab both ends, place the fabric right side together and sew all the way down.  When you get to the end just cut the fabric that’s folded together. This will shrink your length and double your width.
  4. Repeat step #3 a until you are happy with the size.
  5. Trim the cut sides so they are even.

I’ll be hosting a giveaway later this week as well as participating in Plum &  June’s Blog Hop!

Finally snagged a picture of it!  Sorry I didn’t get this posted with the pattern release.

I think the Garfunkel and the Caldonia are my favorites so far.

If you make one be sure to let me know, I’d love to see it!

Block Rock’n Week 8 – Garfunkel

by Julie Hirt

Are you having a good weekend? I am – our deck is almost done!  Thank goodness.

Now onto the good stuff… here is the Garfunkel block.

There is a variation to this block. You can make the center hexagon solid or like this:

The template has the optional area marked.  If you choose to make the first variation be sure your fabric covers the entire center piece (both 8 and 8b).

I looove Paul Simon!  As soon as I made this block the name Garfunkel just fit.   My musical tastes are all over the board.  Maybe it’s because I grew up listening to their music that makes me love them so much?

Couple of my favorites.

This one is just Paul Simon… close enough :)

Block Rock’n Week 7 – Morrison

by Julie Hirt

I can’t believe it’s already week 7 of Block Rock’n!   This one is the “Morrison”.

morrison

You can decide if it’s named after Jim or Van. I’m fans of both, so it’s good either way!

This is my probably my favorite Doors song because it has some great memories associated with it.  When I was 16 my brother used to ride to school with me and we loved listening to People are Strange.

Van Morrison has SO many great tunes – but I’m feeling this one today. I could listen to him all day.

Before I stitched the final seam I played around with the placement.  Here are some alternatives for the Morrison.

Kind of kaleidoscope-ish.

Block Rock’n Week 6 – Marley

by Julie Hirt

Welcome to week 6!   Here is the “Marley” block (aka Three Little Birds).

marley

This may be my favorite block of the series, so far.  I actually had the name picked out before I made the block!  I knew I wanted to do something with Bob Marley and I love the song Three Little Birds.  Then I had to figure out a block.

The other blocks don’t really match their namesake, but this one made sense to try.  I also like how the center makes a 4 pointed star.

Rise up this morning
Smiled with the rising sun
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singing sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true
Saying, “This is my message to you-u-u”

Circles Quilt

by Julie Hirt

Here is my appliqued circle quilt.  I finished it up last fall and posted it on Flickr.

circles

Never got around to blogging about this one because I’m not really a fan.   Loved the concept and the reproduction print fabrics, but my choice of the  blue background just killed it for me.  Maybe I would have liked it with modern fabrics on gray or white?

Not even a fan of the quilting!  I should have done something different. Straight line (at least this straight line) is just not for me – I love the crinkly look of heavier quilting.

I gave it to my 4 year old niece and I think she likes it.  If anything, it will be a good outdoor play quilt or picnic quilt for her.

circles2

Simple to make:

  • Choose your circle size (these are 5″) *
  • Cut up some squares (these are 6.5″)
  • Stack ’em up and stitch them on
  • Arrange however you want and sew, sew, sew!

Approximately 54″ x 60″

To stitch them on I just placed a circle on a square, pinned it in the middle, then zigzag stitched around it.  Went pretty fast! No fusing paper or hand stitching.

* Cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater. I bought these pre-cut off Etsy!  If you have a fancy schmancy fabric cutting machine (I don’t), this would be perfect.

Now go sew something!
