Contact Cards

by Julie Hirt

juliehirtcard

Wheee!  I love how they turned out.

Since I’m not a business, I guess they are contact cards or calling cards.   Whatever they are, they’re kind of fun with the fabric and stitching texture.

I thought of doing this a while back but was stuck on what to call myself.  I didn’t like Quilter or Sewist, and I’m not a Seamstress.  My friend Jonelle helped me brainstorm big time!  I finally settled on Stitcher & Fabric Fanatic.  Although, Fabric Hoarder would be more accurate.

Since I save fabric scraps like crazy, this is just another way to use a few of those small pieces.  Each card turns out one of a kind.

The card design was simple enough and I just had a local printing company hook me up with a box and round the corners.  The cards aren’t much to look at without the fabric. I’m sure the printer thought I was nuts.

Soon I’ll have matching note cards.  Muahaha!  It’s the little things.

Want The Old (google) Reader? You Can!

by Julie Hirt

FINALLY!  I’ve been frantic about Google Reader going away.  I am NOT a fan of BlogLovin or Feedly… what to do?  This morning I found THE OLD READER.

Screenshot:

The Old Reader looks very similar to Google Reader  I think it’s made that way on purpose. It’s basic and I dig it.  You will need to export your Google Reader list and import it into The Old Reader. The process is a bit much, but just takes a minute.

When I use BlogLovin it reminds me of a weird version of Pinterest and I’m not getting into the blog content like I want to.  Feedly just has too many options for me.  I obviously don’t like change. Meh.

Man, this is just a sigh of relief for me.  Now I just need to work on adding about a hundred blogs I have bookmarked.

Pressing Table & Pincushion Caddy

by Julie Hirt

First I’d like to apologize for not getting the Block Rock’n Week 5 posted in time.  I think I’ll be switching to every other Friday now that the weather is getting so nice. We just want to be outside!

Here is my not-perfect-but-it-will-have-to-do pincushion.

pincushion

I had spotted pictures of this pincushion  caddy on Flickr and was drawn to it because of the center storage. I’ve been using my Wonder Clips so much more than pins now, but I still need pins. So this is a great way to store them together and then just grab whichever I prefer.

pincushion1

The bottom is nice and flat and the pincushion itself is fairly large.  You can find the pattern in the book Seams to Me by Anna Marie Horner.

My caddy is SO not perfect and has fabric folds and little things that would normally bug the hell out of me. I think I’m okay with it because I really don’t want to make another one!  Plus, I love each of the fabrics.

If you use the Wonder Clips and pins, you should try this caddy – it’s a perfect solution.

Now the Pressing Table:

pressingtable

I LOVE THIS.  I’ve been doing so much paper piecing and was getting sick of getting up and down, up and down.  Some blocks have 50+ pieces to iron and it was getting to be a hassle.

Remembering a blog post from American Quilting I decided to make one.   So happy I did!  It cost less than $10 (Walmart for the table, I had the other materials) and it took less than 15 minutes to make.

I didn’t use Home Decor weight fabric so I double folded my edges on the underside before stapling. Since the fabric isn’t pulled tightly and I only use it to iron on, I don’t think I’ll have any problems with the staples pulling through.

This just made my sewing station super convenient for paper piecing.  Imagine a trash can next to the pressing table and picture me:  Sew, swivel, iron, swivel, cut, swivel, repeat.

If you make a lot of quilt blocks I seriously recommend this.  I have a large cutting and ironing table, but this is great for those little bits.  It also folds for storing!

See you Friday for Block Rock’n Week 5 :)

URL Changes

by Julie Hirt

Made some really super scary changes to WordPress (that I thought I totally screwed) so I can start using my 627handworks URL rather than my makelemons* URL. First guy at GoDaddy was no help, 2nd guy was a genius and I LOVE HIM. I love you GoDaddy guy!

Basically, this is a test to see how it affects my feeds with both URLs in different readers.

If you subscribe to my blog please update your feed to:
http://627handworks.com/feed/

Or update your saved link to:
http://627handworks.com

The old one should still work, but I can’t make any guarantees. I’ll be using BlogLovin after Google closes reader.

*Make Lemons: I can be a total sour puss.  So it was originally a joke years ago… the old saying “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade”.  Whatever, I’m more of a “I can make lemons out of anything good” kind of person.  So that’s that.

Florida & the Vintage Sheet Beach Blanket

by Julie Hirt

Last summer we spent a gorgeous week in SW Florida.  I really wanted a nice beach blanket for us to lay our towels and bags on without them getting all sandy. Sorry, but laying towels in the sand just doesn’t work for me! Having just purchased a bunch of vintage sheets I decided to cut some up and and back it with an old cotton matelasse coverlet.  I hand tied it on all the corners of the blocks for a more vintage feel.

Fortunately I caught a few images of beach blanket with our vacation pics.  We used it every day and it was easy to pack up and carry around with two sewn in, wrap around velcro straps.

The house we stayed in had a gorgeous quilt that had an awesome crochet border.  I totally forgot about that!  I’m going to try to figure out how to do it on a baby blanket. I hogged this to myself every evening!  Does anyone know how to add crochet to a blanket?  I remember it did not have a regular binding and was hand quilted. Almost like the crochet edging came out from the layers, although I know it was done after it sewed together. (it wasn’t sandwiched in)

Every morning Paul and I were a lucky, lucky couple and wake up to THIS.  Ahh… I wanna go back. It’s miserably cold here right now.  Beautiful room and pretty sunrises every morning. I actually woke up early to see them (I’m typically a late sleeper) and had my coffee on the beach.

I’ll leave you with a few more warm memories. I think I need to get busy on planning this years trip and do some wishful thinking!

Oh…. see this right here?  On low tide we planted an umbrella super deep and all day we floated around it!  We stayed in a small town and had the beach to ourselves, so it was nice and quiet. Just what a vacation should be.

Gettin’ crafty up in here, up in here

by Julie Hirt

Slowly but surely making my craft / sewing room the place I want to be 100% of the time.  No other room in the house has all the colors I love, they are a bit girly.

First we have another Craigslist find.  It’s previous home was in the same area and I got it for a steal!  Little glass doors, cutesy drawers and only needed some minor cleaning.  It’s perfect for holding my fabric pre-cuts.

cabinet

My husband installed this lamp for me this week over my crochet/reading chair. I forgot to take a “before” picture but it was white and drab.  So I just recovered the lampshade with some fabric and voila!  Love. ilovelamp

This stool and I have our issues.  It was originally in my husbands garage workshop area and I kept borrowing it when I was working on crafts. Eventually I just claimed it as mine. It really needs a new paint job but I figured putting a cushy little top on with oilcloth fabric would help tremendously. And it does.

Tissue pouf?  Flower?  Ceiling hangy?  Whatever these are called I just wanted to make one to see if I could. I can and it’s up. Not sure for how long but it does make it a little festive  in here.

Last, but not least, is my marker board.  I took an old16x24 painting and turned it into this.  I can change out the fabric whenever I want!  Right now it’s holding some Nicey Jane and it comes in super handy.  Recently acquired a new sewing machine (whole ‘nother post) and it holds some great little reminders for me.
