How To: Tucked Quilt Fold

by Julie Hirt

This may seem silly but I’m going to share it anyway!

Tucked Quilt

Taking a few seconds to do this will keep your quilt folded and prevent it from being all floppy.   As a gift this makes it easier for wrapping or just tying a bow around.  You can even stick a card in the front flap!

On this one the fold is nice because you can see and feel the minky backing.  (In case you’re wondering the awesomely soft voile is from Cucire.)

Lay out your quilt face down

Tucked Quilt Fold (1)

Fold up a little less than a third of your quilt

Tucked Quilt Fold (2)

Fold over again and you should still see about 4″ of backing

Tucked Quilt Fold (3)

Flip it around

Tucked Quilt Fold (4)

Fold the 4″ backing flap up

Tucked Quilt Fold (5)

Flip it around and fold a third of the quilt over

Tucked Quilt Fold (6)

Fold over the other third

Tucked Quilt Fold (7)

Lift that last fold and you will see a little pocket

Tucked Quilt Fold (8)

Shove the other side in there

Tucked Quilt Fold (9)

That’s it!  Super easy and your quilt won’t unfold.

Tucked Quilt Fold (10)

This fold will also work for large quilts, you just need to play with how small you want it to fold up.   I’ll start with the quilt folded in half before following the steps.

It’s a Banner Day

by Julie Hirt

Made a couple of buntings for my niece and nephew last night and this morning. I was surprised how quickly they come together.

IMG_0438

My nephew is getting ready to hit 3rd grade and wants Jayhawk items and colors for his room.  Good choice, Owen. Red and blue, K-U, Rockchalk!

The KU bunting was made using leftover fabrics from the Bean Bags.

IMG_0446

This pink and purple bunting is for my niece who is four.  I used pale floral fabrics leftover from quilting projects.

Total cost = $0. I like that.   Triangles from both projects are about 8″ wide and 9″ tall.

AND….   **drumroll**

I got 3rd in Love By Hand’s Christmas in July sewing challenge.  Woot, woot!!

Can’t wait to receive my goodies. Muahahaha!

I have a lot of projects I’m wanting to get done so this weekend I’ll be in sewing frenzy mode.   Catch ya later –

Christmas in July – Kaleidoscope Pillow

by Julie Hirt

Finished in the nick of time!  The Christmas challenge at Love By Hand ends today.  My entry is a kaleidoscope pillow.

With so many different scraps I love how colorful it is. I don’t even think there is a repeat fabric!

Love By Hand

kaleidoscope pillow (3)

I hand quilted the front of this using different color threads between the blocks.

kaleidoscope pillow (6)

Since it’s a gift (can’t say who, in case they are reading) I wanted a secure zipper back and included a half inch of flange.

kaleidoscope pillow (5)

And I couldn’t forget my little label.  I still think it’s neat to see my name on something! (coupon 627handworks for 15% off!)

After seeing kaleidoscope pillows from Rita at Red Pepper Quilts and Stephanie at Quarter Incher I had to make one.

kaleidoscope pillow (2)

Now I’m making a kaleidoscope quilt.  The pattern is different and I hope it turns out just as bright.

Oh!  I know I’ve mentioned this before but I always keep an eye out for clearance sheets.

kaleidoscope pillow (7)
They are perfect for pillow linings because you can get them cheap and at the same time add an interesting pop of color.

Now I need to fold it up and store it with my Christmas items so I don’t forget I made it!  Hope she likes it :)

Did you have an entry in the challenge?  Have you created anything using a kaleidoscope pattern?

Store Patterns Now Available

by Julie Hirt

This is a first but I’ve put up a couple of patterns over at Craftsy.

argyle

I do have Free Paper Piecing templates available and plan to keep adding to those after the Block Rock’n series is complete (only 2 more!).

thirdwheel

Since I’m in a few quilting bees I’d like to try and offset some of the shipping costs.   I love having quilting bee members overseas, but I don’t love the cost of mailing a tiny little block!

scrapmedley

This Scrap Medley pattern is great for using up scraps.  I made a pillow top strictly out of my scrap pile.  It won’t break the bank at $1.

snowman

I think I may have a little holiday series with the snowman above, Rudolph and something else.  Simple pattern you make to your size.

You can access these at anytime by clicking “Pattern Store” from the link at the top of my page or in the sidebar.

Hope you are having a fantastic Monday – see you for Thursday Threads!

It’s a Baby Explosion

by Julie Hirt

Babies, babies, everywhere!   I love babies and I’m glad so many of my friends are having them lately.  This little boy quilt is made using the Comma line by Zen Chic for Moda.

comma4

It’s the first quilt I’ve backed with voile and I am IN.LOVE.

comma2

I wish you could feel how soft this is through your screen.  It’s pretty amazing.  I may have a hard time backing quilts with regular quilting cotton now.  At least  baby quilts, anyway.

comma1

For the piecing I just did a simple 5″ patchwork.  With this fun fabric line I didn’t think the pattern needed much.

comma3

Stitching straight lines with alternating double lines created a neat pattern on the back.
