T-Shirt Yarn Crochet Pouf

by Julie Hirt

I’ve made a lot of changes to my craft room and finished projects, so I’m hoping to get around to posting a few updates.

Recently I’ve seen a lot of pictures of crochet poufs that I’ve loved (Pinterest).  I’m not paying a few hundred dollars for one either!   So here is my version of a crochet pouf I made a couple of weeks ago out of t-shirt yarn. I’m very happy with how it turned out and how quick it was to make.

I used this tutorial for creating the yarn. Can you believe this used FIFTEEN shirts! Originally, I had planned on using my husbands old undershirts and ran out.  After a quick trip to the Salvation Army and $.50 a shirt, I decided I may need to find a few more uses for t-shirt yarn. Maybe some baskets to hold my WIP?

It’s pretty sturdy and when you sit on it, it doesn’t have a ton of give so it’s super comfy. It’s stuffed with 2 old comforters. You can’t tell in the picture but it’s about 2 feet wide by 8″ tall. I didn’t use a pattern, I just double crocheted a basic crochet circle until it was big enough.  Then I DC a bunch of rounds until I was satisfied with the height.  Then decreased the circle and left a hole big enough to stuff!

It sits in front of this AWESOME Craigslist find.  This chair is amazing. A girl had a lot of cute items listed and no longer had room for them after moving in with her fiance. Her loss! She had recently had it recovered and it’s down stuffed and oh-so-comfy, as you can tell by the 3 little squirts who have claimed it as their own.

If you can crochet and like the look of the poufs, I’d recommend making one!

Waldorf Window Stars – Basic Star & Version 1

by Julie Hirt

I purchased some Kite Paper online to fold some German Froebel stars. I was looking up different stars to see what kind of paper other people used and stumbled across the Waldorf Stars. I vaguely remember making something like this in preschool.  Addicted to these already and I’ve only been making them for a few days!  Here is a video of a basic star:

After you get the process down you can start experimenting with all different folds, colors and come up with some pretty cool designs.  Here is a tutorial for another star design:

Pezzy Race

by Julie Hirt

This one is for ME! I used a Pezzy Print by American Jane for Moda jelly roll and the pattern is a simple Jelly Roll Race. Here is a good tutorial.

Quilt for Bailee

by Julie Hirt

A friend of mine recently had a daughter and I wanted to make a quilt for her.  Decided not to use a pattern and just winged it. I was a little nervous about how the piano key border would turn out, but I think it looks nice and will definitely do it again!

I used a layer cake for this project, the fabric is Sophie by Chez Moi for Moda. I pulled out the greens and deep reds. The backing and binding are fabrics from a local fabric store.

For the quilt tag I used a font from Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection by Aimee Ray for Bailey’s name.

Size is roughly 53 x 53

Oh, deer!

by Julie Hirt

Jeeze… It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything.  I wanted to share this deer pillow I made for the holidays.  Found the idea and pattern from Sew Homegrown on Pinterest.  I’ll blame Pinterest for my lack of updates.

I love the pattern and I’m trying to think of other ways to use it!  Maybe shrink it down and applique it onto some placemats?  Enlarge it for throw?  Girly version on a shirt for my niece?  Possibilities galore.

Best part about the pillow is that I didn’t purchase anything to make it.  The red fabric I pulled out of a box for goodwill.  I had 3 long window valance things from Target that didn’t work in this house – but now I’ll use them for Christmas fabric.  They are a nice mid-weight twill.  The black fabric is leftover binding material from my first quilt.   Then I just used the pillow insert from a different covering to switch out through the season.

Quilt Tags

by Julie Hirt

Things have been a little slow on the sewing front. I’m being entirely too indecisive on what I want to do with the Parisville pack.  Squares or Diamonds on point?  Bricks?  I don’t know. I do know I picked up about 6 yards of Kona in a purple/plum color for the sashing.  That was at least a step in the right direction.

Recently I purchased up a couple of embroidery books that have inspired me to make some quilt tags.

Embroidered Effects by Sublime Stitching – pure awesome because it comes with loads of iron-on transfers.

Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection – includes a disc with hundreds of transfers. Love this because you can size them to fit whatever you want.

Both the Gnome and the Love Bear I used for my tags are free patterns from BadBird.  Nothing beats free.

My husband was on a scroll saw kick and made me a couple of thread holders. I love them!

Hopefully I’ll be motivated to start that quilt soon…
