Little Things

by Julie Hirt

It’s been a hodge podge of sewing projects lately.   Someone in Instagram (who are you?) was posting little baby booties and I had to make a pair.

627handworks Briar Rose baby booties (1) Fabrics are from the Heather Ross Briar Rose collection.  The interior is white flannel and the soles are flax cotton linen.

I have a new niece coming in a few months so I’ll put these aside for her.

The pattern is for reversible booties and it’s FREE!  You can download it here.

Curved piecing has always scared me so I decided I needed to practice.  After watching a tutorial from She Can Quilt, I gave it a go.

The squares are 3″ and after finishing the block I made a couple more and turned it into a pillow cover.

What are you working on?

Grumpy Cat Pillow

by Julie Hirt

It’s Grumpy Cat!  I think he’s upset the background is purple. hehe

The second I saw the pattern on Instagram, I bought it.  You can find the ‘Grouchy Cat’ paper piecing pattern here or here. Sew What Sherlock is a mad genius with this!

My cat has a teensy little mistake by his eye, but we’ll just ignore that.  This is the 18″ version and I added a 2″ border so I could make a pillow cover.

I’ve never paper pieced with such large pieces before, so it was a little interesting getting the angles for the fabric right.

This morning I turned my Scrap Medley blocks into a pillow cover.  You can purchase the pattern from my Craftsy store for a buck.

I’m determined to make 2014 a year of finishes for all of my WIP.

………. and I just got sidetracked for an hour looking at Grumpy Cat meme’s.

I don’t have a cat but I do have three dogs.  One of them really wanted in the pillow pics.

If you make a Grumpy Cat I must see it!

Sew Together Bag

by Julie Hirt

I’m going to start this off by saying I LOVE this bag!  It ranks up there with my Triple Zip and Weekender in the ‘bag love’ department.

627handworks Sew Together Bag (4)

It’s called the Sew Together Bag and you can purchase the pattern via SewDemented on Craftsy.

Personally, I think it should be renamed the Hold all the Things Bag.  I mean, take a look at the guts of this thing:

627handworks Sew Together Bag (1)

Heaven! I love pouches, zippers, scrapping together fabrics… everything about this bag is so fun.

627handworks Sew Together Bag (7)

The weight of it is nice, it’s pretty substantial with fusible fleece interfacing.

I’m going to use mine to store crochet hooks and tatting needles.  Over 30 hooks, a couple pairs of scissors, tubes of needles and still room for more.

Even after you zip the pouches there is plenty of space to store goodies.

My overall take on the Sew Together Bag pattern:  Get it, make it, love it. Make more.

When I first saw the price I was a little on the fence, but it’s totally worth it.  There are a couple of tricky spots, but I asked for help on Instagram and instantly had a few replies, even by SewDemented herself.  woot!

This is also my very first selvedge (salvage?) project.  Now I’m really happy I started saving them because it’s so fun to play with those little ends.

First post of the year? Shameful!

by Julie Hirt

Sometimes life happens and I can’t get to sewing and blogging as much as I’d like.   As of late, I’ve been on a roll!  Blocks for two different quilt bees are finished.  Yippee!

IMG_0707

I finished up my Fussy Cut Swap blocks and they aren’t even due until mid February!  (Maybe this will make up for the Scrappy Trip blocks below.)

This fun swap is hosted by Amanda at What the Bobbin. The square in a square paper piecing pattern has taken off in quiltyland under the name ‘Economy Block’.

The template Amanda made for us creates 4″ finished blocks.

Hello Tokyo fabrics star as the fussy centers.  This line is so cute I can’t stand it!

Finally, I’ve finished up my Scrappy Trip Bee blocks… which were supposed to be mailed 2 weeks ago. Gack!

IMG_0719

Colors requested: Nothing!  She wanted to see what would come her way, so I made something I would enjoy.

IMG_0721

Colors requested:  Oranges, navy, turquoise/aqua.

IMG_0722

Colors requested:  Solids!

IMG_0723

Colors requested: Brights, all colors of the rainbow.

IMG_0724

Colors requested: Prints with a white background for outer squares and happy bright colored print for the center.

This about sums up what I’ve been up to.   I’ve decided to scale back the size of the Stars quilt for my nephew.  Thirty blocks would be entirely too big for him.  Plus, it’s daunting.

Happy Stitching!

Military T-Shirt Quilt

by Julie Hirt

This quilt was made for my brother with his Marine Corps t-shirts and cammies from his military years.  He served from January, 2001 to February, 2009.  I was nervous to make this because it’s my first t-shirt quilt, and I couldn’t buy more fabric if I messed it all up!  I know the shirts are special so that first cut was a bit scary.

I decided LAST MINUTE that I wanted to have it finished and ready by Christmas.  I started the quilting 2 days before I was to give it to him.   Have you ever quilted over t-shirts and had problems with thread?  I did!

My top thread kept breaking, breaking, breaking.  I was beyond stressing!   Using Aurifil 40 wt, I couldn’t see that being the problem.  But after changing bobbins, needles, tensions, and a thorough cleaning, all to no avail, I sent my husband off to the store (in the snow) to pick up some poly Gutermann. Loaded it up, fingers crossed…  and it kept snapping too!  ACK

After taking a big wine break and some serious Googling, I found it was the plastic logo on the shirts.  I laid some thin tissue over the plastic areas  IT WORKED!  Mother of miracles.

I guess the plastic is sticky on the needles and pushes the top thread up causing it to snap or shred.

I apologize for the poor photo quality. Since the quilt was finished so last minute (hand stitching the binding less than 24 hours to go) I didn’t get take good photos, these are with my phone.

Tried my best to make some kind of camouflage design with the quilting.  The back actually looks pretty cool, it’s Kona Cotton in Khaki and with the green thread, the camo pattern is pretty neat.

I used Pellon 950F ShirTailor interfacing on the back of all the t-shirts.  My 15″ Omnigrid was priceless making this quilt.

I’m not sure if there will be more t-shirt quilts in my near future, but I’m really happy with the end product and my brother loves it.  After figuring out the thread issue I was able to use my beloved Aurifil (Army Green 40 Wt #5012) throughout.  The finished size is 68″ x 72″.

Happy sewing!

Oh My Stars: Quilt Progress

by Julie Hirt

Hope you enjoyed your holidays and got to spend a lot of time with family and friends.  I’ve been quiet due to holiday sewing but I’m back in the swing of things.

My nephew will be getting a ‘big boy’ bed in the next few weeks and I to make him a twin size quilt.  I’ve decided on a star quilt using 3 star patterns from the Oh My Stars! QAL.

The Diamond Heart

Chevron Star stars (6)

And the Quattro Stagioni Star, which I think is my favorite to make.

I’m using a mix of blue fabrics for the stars and black and white prints for the background.

I was able to get all of these made today – I LOVE VACATION!   They are 12″ blocks so I’m thinking 30 blocks (5 by 6) will be big enough for toddler in a twin bed.

Yesterday my husband and I did a little hunting at River Market Antiques.  It’s a large, awesome, 4 story building that is insane for treasure-hunting in downtown KC.  I picked up a vintage feedsack quilt top and aran afghan. I’ll definitely be sharing some pictures of those.

Oh! I also made my brother a t-shirt quilt for Christmas. It was all of his USMC shirts and cammies from his military years. I’m really happy with how it turned out.  No good pictures yet because of the snowy mess (and it was a secret), but I want to post about that soon.

Enjoy your New Year’s Eve and be safe!
