Modern Building Blocks – Block of the Month

by Julie Hirt

Have you guys seen this?

modern_building_blocks

Moda’s Modern Building Blocks pattern.  SWOON.

I Don’t Do Dishes is hosting a Block of the Month in three different colorways!

  • Option A will be similar to the original quilt design, using a wide array of bright modern solids and blenders in a lovely rainbow palette with added neutrals.

  • Option B is inspired by and will include fabrics from Heather Bailey’s ‘Up Parasol’ collection. This line offers happy greens, oranges, pinks and blues, offset with a cream neutral.

  • Option C is inspired by and will include fabrics from Joel Dewberry’s ‘Birch Farm’ collection. This line offers a more muted, neutral palette, featuring cool aqua, turquoise, chartreuse, gray, brown and cream.

Shipping starts September 1st, so there’s still time to sign up!

The Block of the Month will last 12 months and each month you’ll receive fabric to make 4 of the blocks.   You’ll also receive the pattern on the first shipment.

I’ve seen a lot of people posting on Instagram that they will be participating, so I think it will be a fun one to join.  Check it out!

Scrappy Trip Bee – Round 6 is OPEN!

by Julie Hirt

It’s that time –

scrappytripbee

Whether you would be a new participant or you’ve joined before, we’d love to have you!

In this bee you make 5 blocks and receive 5 blocks in your color preference.  We follow Quiltville’s tutorial – this is a great pattern for all levels of quilters.  Since it is an international bee it will truly make for a “scrappy trip around the world” quilt.

You can view photos of the blocks and even some finished quilts in our Flickr group.

Gypsy Wife April & May Blocks

by Julie Hirt

Woohoo! Got caught up before I fell too far behind.  Here are my April blocks for the Gypsy Wife QAL.

Gypsy Wife blocks (1)

Would you like to be loved by me for all time?   See that little square on the bottom right – the one with the little floral center and green trim?  The center fabric is by Barbara Jones for Henry Glass. It was one of my very first fabric purchases in 2010 (I think the line is from 2009) and it’s still my favorite print of all time.  If you find it, please buy it up for me!

May blocks:

Gypsy Wife blocks (2)

The aqua prints were a surprise gift from a Flickr user I met in the Gypsy Wife group.  It was a such a sweet mail day when I received them.

Half the reason I quilt is for love of fabric.  So it’s pretty cool how different prints have memories associated with them.   Considering I’m trying to make this entire quilt using only scraps (not cutting into large fabric pieces) I’ll associate a lot of these prints with different people and projects. Some examples of fabric memories in these 7 blocks:

  • Purple floral is from a baby romper I made my niece
  • Aqua prints were gifts from an online friend
  • Red & white print was used in gifts from Mara (Simon Says Sew)
  • The fox is leftover from a fussy cut swaps hosted by Amanda (What the Bobbin)
  • The plaid is leftover from a cowboy quilt for a co-worker
  • Outer yellow print is gift fabric from Sarah Schraw (Sarah Quilts)
  • Center yellow trim is leftover from a gift for Stephanie (Quarter Incher)
  • I could go on…

I’m not a “Gypsy Wife” but I’m excited that my quilt will have a lot of people and memories associated within.

And… I’ll leave you with this:

dogsout

I find it hilarious.

Check it! Birthday Bash Goodies

by Julie Hirt

I’m participating in a Birthday Bash Swap where 8 of us are exchanging handmade gifts for each other on the recipients birthday month.   I, being ever so lucky, was the first recipient with my birthday being the end of February.  We started a little late in the year so I received my happy mail during most of March.

In hindsight, I should have blogged each of these gifts separately.  There is so much goodness in each one that I could take a dozen pictures of each.

My items are already in use *heart-heart-heart*.  Rather than round it all up, I’ll be linking to each blogger and the handmade item on their site (if available).  The pictures I’m posting are from the day they arrived and I shared my happiness via Instagram.

Amanda from What the Bobbin started me off with this bundle of awesome.

Cosmetic Case
It’s a cosmetic case with fabric that I’ve been lusting over and can’t get my hands on.  Those viewfinders are just drool-worthy.  My case has already been on a trip to the lake and currently storing some of my traveling products.   More info and pattern details here.  She also MADE those cute pins and sent me oodles of fun things including a flying geese ruler.  Give Amanda a visit and join in on her fussy cut swaps!  They are FUN.

Next up is a table topper from Renee of Quilts of a Feather.

Here fishy

It totally makes me swoon.  Before she asked about using batiks I wasn’t sure I liked them – this SO changed my mind!  It’s absolutely perfect and reminds me the ocean and the little fish make me smile.  It’s on my nightstand.   I don’t believe Renee has blogged about it but you should check out her site. Her quilting is gorgeous and she makes it look easy. Just look at the fish scales!  I wish I had some of that talent.  (BTW – those hair ties are the best kind, they don’t leave hair dents)

Here’s Hootie! From Mara at Simon Says Sew

birthday bash 2014 (5)

Isn’t he adorable?   The pattern is Owl You Need.   He has little pockets on his belly and they were stuffed full of fun things including 3 buttons.  The buttons were puppies, 2 white and 1 brown – just like dogs!  She also sent the best needles I’ve ever used;  glass pins made by Little House. Hootie keeps me company on my sewing table and holds misc items for me. Definitely stop by and give Mara a visit!

Embroidery Pouch from Stephanie at Quarter Incher

birthday bash 2014 (1)

birthday bash 2014 (2)

Yes!  It’s a great item that I didn’t even know I had to have.  First, the front of it is amazing – I love the black with the brights.  Second, I actually needed this to store some of hand sewing things in.  It holds a lot. A LOT.  You can find the pattern info here.   And… look at all the goodies!   Stephanie is pretty amazing with just her quilting abilities, but get this:  She just had a baby and pretty much blogged, stitched and quilted like a maniac up to the second she had him.  Yeah.  She’s a boss.  So, stop by and check her out.

Ellie Travel Case by Nicole at Snips Snippets

birthday bash 2014 (6)

I have to say this:  Nicole said this was her first swap (mine, too) and I’m SO happy it was to me. Ha! She totally spoiled me rotten with goodies. Like, seriously loaded that Travel Case up and it has more space than you’d realize.   You can find more pictures and info on the pattern here.  Fabrics, small open wide pouch, washi, candy… the list goes on, but the Travel Case seriously makes me happy.  I love the fabrics and it’s super functional.  Stop by to say hi and drool over the toy blocks she made (in the same link as above).

Huge Basket from Sarah at Sarah Quilts

birthday bash 2014 (7)

It’s LARGE!  I already have things stored in it and can think of a hundred reasons to make more of these.  She shares the pattern info here.  I’m using mine to store our outdoor plates and miscellaneous items I’m always lugging outside.  We eat outside a lot in the warmer months and that time is upon us. This basket will be greatly used and looks much prettier than the hideous grocery bag I was using.  Plus – look at the pouch (which would have been fantastic to receive by itself!) and all of the fun things she sent.  I’m really excited to use the metal zippers, I’ve never sewn with them before.  Sarah recently kicked off a DYO Sampler at Sew, Mama, Sew!  You definitely need to check it out.

Finishing up with Leona at Leona’s Quilting Adventures

birthday bash 2014 (8)

Fun, fun, fun!  My birthday bash wrapped up when I received these goodies from Leona.  The little basket is super cute and is currently on my cutting table to catch stray scraps.  I love the scrappy-ness of it.  She also sent some items I can really use and the doorknob notepad was a hit with the girls.  They like to put notes on the garage door like “get candy”, “pay Tori $20”.  Heh.  Leona’s sister recently passed away and she’s taking a break from the blog, but definitely check her site out and add her to future reading.  She’s involved in a lot of interesting swaps and likes to pay-it-forward.

Isn’t it all amazing?!  Quilters have got to be some of the most generous people I know and I’m thankful to be involved in the online community.  Right now I’m working on my gift for the next birthday girl, Nicole. I hope she enjoys her month as much as I did!  Big thank you to Stephanie for putting it together!

Triangle Quilt Along

by Julie Hirt

Head on over to The Sassy Quilter.  Today is the last day to link up your fabric choices for a chance to win a prize!  I love prizes.

photo 2(1)

I’ve had these fabrics sitting in a pile since late last summer. They were originally destined to be made into a herringbone / scrappy style chevron quilt.  I’m kind of over that.

The fabric requirements are posted here.   I’m 2 fabrics short, but since these are half yard cuts I’ll be okay.  I could always add more… I may even go bigger!

I don’t have a fancy triangle ruler, but I have a quilting ruler with 60 degree angle markings. That’s all you really need!

TriangleButton800

I’m pretty excited to make this. Here is the only other equilateral triangle quilt I’ve made:

Hope you join in the Quilt Along, I love triangle quilts and seeing all the different fabrics will be really fun.

Isn’t she cute?  It’s a vintage thread holder I scored from @516vintage on Instagram.

Hey… I posted two days in a row!

Gypsy Wife Quilt Along – February

by Julie Hirt

This is my first actual Quilt Along and it’s pretty exciting!  I finally got my hands on Jen Kingwell’s Gypsy Wife pattern, then I saw Michelle‘s post about a Quilt Along. It was fate. I thought I’d have to play some catch up, but January was just figuring out fabric choices.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m going to try and use fabric from my scrap bins only.  We’ll see.

The first 6 blocks were pinwheels, 4 with borders. Crazy luck, but I have a bunch of leftover HST’s from the Stars Quilt that are the perfect size.

pinwheel fillers

Since they are mostly blue and white I tried to throw in some more color.

The 7th block for February is a Color Wheel.

colorwheel

The fabric patterns wouldn’t be my typical choice, but they were in my scraps and I dig the actual color. So it works!

I love Jen’s quilt and hope to end up with something I love half as much.

gypsywife

The Quilt Along is spread out over a year and laid out in a format I can actually follow.  I think it’s around 7 blocks per month.   The pattern looks a  bit crazy to me with blocks of all sizes, and strips all over the place.  It will be nice to have a group of quilters to refer to with questions and suggestions.

If you are interested it’s definitely not too late!  Information can be found here.  The monthly schedule can be found here.  Huge thank you to Michelle at Factotum of Arts for organizing this.

Are you joining in?  If not, you totally should!
