Farmer’s Wife 1930’s – Week 1

by Julie Hirt

As impatient as I felt, this week came pretty quickly.  Here are my first three blocks.

Becky Aunt Bonnie 627handworks

I’ll be adding a couple extra blocks per week (in the future) so I have enough for the King size. I’ll get the extra block  patterns from the first Farmer’s Wife book because I don’t want any duplicates.

The Bonnie is my favorite of the three.  At least for now.

I’ll be in Florida next week so I’m a little nervous about falling behind.  It’s early in the Sew Along so I’m still really excited – hopefully that keeps me in gear!

Here are the fabrics used in the first three blocks.  This post talks about the two Kona solid collections I’m using.  And I finally decided on the background color – Moda Bella Solids in Porcelain.  It’s a nice off white that isn’t too warm.

This is a year long sew along so there’s still plenty of time to join.  The book may be on back-order (demand was pretty crazy for a bit) but you can catch up!  Check out Gnome Angel for details.

Farmer’s Wife 1930’s Sampler Sew Along

by Julie Hirt

I’m in!  I was trying to hold back from joining* but I caved and am super excited!

*I’m terrible at sew alongs, especially year long stints.  I’m just now finishing up my Gypsy Wife quilt after 19 months.

1930sFarmersWife

I already own the original Farmer’s Wife and the Farmer’s Wife Pony Club. I love those books and the stories are fantastic – but the actual making of one of these?  Kind of scary.  With so many people joining in this sew along on Instagram, I think it will push me along.  The sew along will also help by providing a variety of piecing techniques and options.

Today is Labor Day and I saw Craftsy was having a big sale. I’ve been stalking fabrics trying to decide what to use for this.  I knew I wanted to try something a little outside typical fabric choice (brighter colors, small prints) and I’ve decided to go solid. This is a first for me!

Movement

Expressions

I purchased fat quarter bundles in both the Modern Movement and Modern Expressions.  These are Kona solids – the collections are exclusive to Craftsy, if you’re looking to buy.

I know I can’t go wrong with these.  I love all the color and can’t wait to play with combinations.

Thinking about joining?   Follow Angie at Gnome AngelFAQ is here.  The announcement with additional info here.

The sew along doesn’t start until September 28th so you have plenty of time to pick up the book and get your fabrics in order!

Are you participating?

Scrappy Trip (from) Around the World Quilt

by Julie Hirt

So, SO excited to have completed this quilt.  The blocks have been collected for two years from several countries and numerous states.

Scrappy Trip Around the World - 627handworks (6)

When I started the Scrappy Trip Bee (you can still sign up for Round 10 HERE!) I had already made a Scrappy Trip quilt. I was thinking it would be really cool to have one from literally ‘around the world’. So that’s how to bee began.

I wish I had thought to write on the blocks as I received them – just like the country or state in the corner.  Luckily I saved my records from the Scrappy Trip Bee Rounds.  Came up with this label and had it printed at Spoonflower.

So much was going on in the front that I chose a bright white backing.

The size ended up at 60″ x 84″  – which is twin size. I originally had the blocks laid out like my first quilt, which is 6 blocks by 6 blocks and 72″ square.  I think this will be more versatile over the years since it can actually cover a bed.

Scrappy Trip Around the World - 627handworks (4)

This is the 3rd quilt (I think… maybe 4th?) that I’ve done on the long arm.

I actually hated the pattern when I first started and almost took it apart and ripped out the stitches!  I’m glad I stuck with it because I’m pretty happy with the end result and it washed up nice and crinkly.   It’s a great beginner pattern that can be done on a regular machine as well – just double wavy horizontal lines with vertical lines between those.

It’s definitely my FAVORITE quilt to date!  I love that each block is made by someone in a different city or country and they have a block from me as well.  This one has some meaning.

OUT TAKE!

Scrappy Trip Around the World - 627handworks (3)

Hehe.  The man behind most of my quilt photos.  I hear a lot of “my arms hurt”, “hurry up”, “what do you mean it’s upside down?!”.   I’m just happy for the help!

Scrappy Trip Around the World Bee – Round 9!

by Julie Hirt

I can’t believe it’s the 9th round, but here we are.

scrappytripbee

New to This?

To make things easier I’ll just share the email that was sent out to members of the last few rounds:

There will be at least two more rounds of the Scrappy Trip Bee:

Sign ups May 1 – 6
Must be mailed by July 15

Sign ups August 1 – 6
Must be mailed by October 15

If there is still interest in November I’ll keep it going or pass the torch. :)

I’ve had some feedback that there isn’t much camaraderie within the Flickr hives. I totally understand how we get busy, are already involved in other social media platforms and it’s hard to check into one more place. To make socialization a little easier I have:

Added Instagram usernames to the sign up form. This will be shared within your group. Be sure to add the hashtag #scrappytripbee when you share anything. Instagram is a great source of inspiration and it’s easy to stalk your favorite quilters.

I created a Facebook community page and would love to see you there! Please share images, ask questions and tell us about yourself so we can all get to know one another.

Maybe these two things will add some fresh blood and we can get blocks from different cities and countries!  Feel free to invite friends as well.

>>SIGN UP FORM <<

I’ll leave it open until May 6th or 8 hives are full. Check below for your name – I’ll add them as quickly as I can.

Don’t forget to check into your hive once it’s formed!

Scrappy Bee – Round 7

by Julie Hirt

Signs ups are OPEN!

RULES / FAQ:

We use Quiltville’s Scrappy Trip Along the World tutorial using 6 fabric strips. The block you mail needs to measure 12.5″. It is very important that we all use the same tutorial and follow the pattern.

Quilt shop quality fabrics. You are receiving quality fabrics, make sure you are sending the same. This mainly means no Joann’s or big box store fabrics, with a few exceptions like Kona, Denise Schmidt and Juliana Horner. If you are questioning a fabric, ask the recipient or your group.

Mail your block out by the correct date. I know life happens and sometimes gets in the way. But, if you say you can’t mail out your blocks in time and your group sees you posting photos of other projects, it’s one of those “umm…” moments. You know? Just be considerate.

There are 6 people per hive, you will make 5 blocks and receive 5 blocks.

When you sign up you may suggest yours blocks be made with color preferences: dark center strip, no black, low volume, brights, etc. Do your best to honor your hives preferences.

Need to be willing to ship internationally. There are quite a few international members and that’s what makes this fun and truly a “Scrappy Trip Around the World”.  It can be expensive and I do my best to limit the international members to 2 per hive.

The rounds take place 4 times per year:

  • Sign ups May 1 – 6 | Must be mailed by July 15
  • Sign ups August 1 – 6 | Must be mailed by October 15
  • Sign ups November 1 – 6 | Must be mailed by January 15
  • Sign ups February 1 – 6 | Must be mailed by April 15

Sign up HERE.

Make sure you are a member of the Flickr Group and check in regularly!
