Block Rock’n Week 9 – Penny Lane

by Julie Hirt

Ready for a music heavy post today?   Block Rock’n Week 9 brings you Penny Lane.

(don’t look too closely at that center point.  My two halves weren’t perfectly aligned… argh.)

You know, I couldn’t have a Block Rock’n series without a nod to the Beatles.   Although I should have named it “Imagine”, as in imagine all the possibilities.

When I was playing around with color I realized the little piecing triangles could make this a completely different design.

Or just focus on the large points.

Back to the Beatles… When I was younger I used to think they were overrated and wouldn’t even listen to them out of pure stubbornness.  Thanks to my husband all that changed.

Our little chihuahua rescue is named Penny Lane.  All three of our dogs are actually named after music:
Mr Bojangles (really the SNL skit dog show, but it’s a song too)
Penny Lane
Huey Lewis – little Huey is deaf (rescue) so he can’t rock out to music with us

Soo many great tunes.  What are some of your favorites?

I could post these Beatles songs all day, but I’ll stop here.  This is definitely one of my most loved.

Due to changes within Craftsy, I am moving the patterns to Etsy.
Buy the entire series of 12 blocks for $5 or each block for $1.

Download HERE

Feel free to share within sewing groups if you use this pattern as your Bee block!
It does NOT need to be purchased multiple times. Same with the series purchase.

If you make this block I’d love to see it:

Let’s Get Acquainted Blog Hop & Giveaway

by Julie Hirt

EDITED:  – Apparently I can’t follow directions very well.  I posted this way too early so I took it down and re-posted today.  I always jump ahead! Now you can understand why I have problems following patterns.

Thanks so much to Plum & June for hosting the Let’s Get Acquainted Blog Hop 2013.  I’ve found some truly awesome blogs through this.

Plum and June

I started sewing 3 years ago this month.  I was out of commission for almost a year due to a house fire, so I’ve actually been sewing for just over two years.

First Quilt: (first sewing project, for that matter)

IMG_0114

I’ve always enjoyed crafts like crochet, embroidery, jewelry, paper, on and on but nothing would ‘stick’.   I lose interest pretty quickly. So I was very wary about sewing and investing in the machine and fabrics. No one in my family sews and I had no experience whatsoever.

I’m happy to say that I’m in love with quilting and don’t see that changing. Fabric is too near and dear to my heart. I learned to sew and quilt by watching TONS of YouTube videos and the blogging world. I can’t thank the interwebs enough!

I jumped into free motion quilting with my 2nd quilt:

Since those first couple of weeks I’ve made many quilts and hope to make tons more.

Last finished quilt:

What is six-two-seven?   My husband and I started dating on 6/27/07 and were married on 6/27/11. When I first started this blog I didn’t even own a sewing machine. I just enjoyed making things and needed a name that wasn’t specific to a particular craft. So that’s how I came up with 627handworks.

Favorite non-quilt project:  My (beloved) Weekender.  I am still surprised that I was able to make this thing.

Weekender (10)

I also love, love, love my triple zipper pouch. If you haven’t made one, you should!  I store all my English Paper Piecing supplies in it.

Favorite Notion: I’ve found that I cannot live without Wonder Clips.  I use these for everything!  I rarely pin anymore; the clips are great for piecing, too.

Most recently I started hosting a weekly link party.  It’s called Thursday Threads and I would love for you to share your embroidery, crochet, quilting, sewing, anything made with thread!

I’m on the last stretch of Block Rock’n with 4 blocks to go.  It’s a free paper piecing series that I release a pattern for every other Friday.  Here are a couple of the blocks:

Thursday Threads 7/11 Link Up

by Julie Hirt

Here is my current WIP that’s on the design wall.  It’s a baby quilt for a friend using 2 Cuzco charm packs.

WIP

The HST’s are done but I may do a little rearranging before sewing it all together. I purchased solid white minky for the backing.  Any tips on quilting with it?

I’ve already pulled out the fabrics for my next quilt.  I’m finally going to get started on that Kaleidoscope pattern.

Not sure if I like the black as the base, I may pick up an Oakshott or linen.

Paganelli Jelly Roll Race

by Julie Hirt

I made this Jelly Roll Race quilt for my mom last year and forgot to take pictures before I gave it to her.  It’s one of my favorites; I love this fabric collection!

paganellijellyroll

The fabric is Flower Power by Jennifer Paganelli.  I found 2 of these jelly rolls on ebay last year (they are really hard to find) and bought them both.  I’m hoarding the other roll until I find *the* pattern.

paganellijellyroll1

Jelly Roll Race quilts come together so fast and I love the patchwork look they make.  42 strips make a super throw size quilt.

The backing is a Denise Schmidt fabric – it’s like the most perfect orange. I wish I had bought more of it when it was available.  The binding is a Kona solid.

paganellijellyroll2

Since it was for my mom I embroidered a little quilt label onto it.

paganellijellyroll3

To make the Jelly Roll Race quilt I used this method.  Here are the basic steps:

  1. Take a jelly roll set and sew each strip end to end.  You’ll have a super long (140 feet!) 2.5″ strip of fabric.
  2. Cut 18″ off one end so it will be offset (thanks lattegirl40!)
  3. Grab both ends, place the fabric right side together and sew all the way down.  When you get to the end just cut the fabric that’s folded together. This will shrink your length and double your width.
  4. Repeat step #3 a until you are happy with the size.
  5. Trim the cut sides so they are even.

I’ll be hosting a giveaway later this week as well as participating in Plum &  June’s Blog Hop!
