Triangle Quilt Along

by Julie Hirt

Head on over to The Sassy Quilter.  Today is the last day to link up your fabric choices for a chance to win a prize!  I love prizes.

photo 2(1)

I’ve had these fabrics sitting in a pile since late last summer. They were originally destined to be made into a herringbone / scrappy style chevron quilt.  I’m kind of over that.

The fabric requirements are posted here.   I’m 2 fabrics short, but since these are half yard cuts I’ll be okay.  I could always add more… I may even go bigger!

I don’t have a fancy triangle ruler, but I have a quilting ruler with 60 degree angle markings. That’s all you really need!

I’m pretty excited to make this. Here is the only other equilateral triangle quilt I’ve made:

Hope you join in the Quilt Along, I love triangle quilts and seeing all the different fabrics will be really fun.

Isn’t she cute?  It’s a vintage thread holder I scored from @516vintage on Instagram.

Hey… I posted two days in a row!

Gypsy Wife March + Fussy Cut Swap

by Julie Hirt

Here are my March blocks for the Gypsy Wife Quilt Along.

I’m forcing myself to work strictly from my scraps (I need a reason to keep them), so it’s pretty hodgepodge.

Gypsy Wife March

A little rant…  If I’m going to be honest, I have to say this quilt pattern is kicking my ass.   The block sizes are for ‘finished’ blocks, which I could care less about.  I really need to know the size the blocks should be when I’m making them.  After it’s all put together, I don’t really care what size they are (finished).  The pattern seems to jump all around and I just can’t follow it very well. Hmph.

That being said, I think it’s totally worth doing because the end result looks insanely awesome.  I’m sure other people can follow this pattern perfectly; my brain just doesn’t mesh with this one.  I will say, it’s definitely making me think.

pershing

The Pershing block may be my favorite so far.  It was really fun picking out the fabrics.

Fussy Cut!  I love this swap.  It’s hosted with Amanda at What the Bobbin and I believe it will be an ongoing monthly swap with different themes.

The theme was woodland. I may have missed the mark a little but fox live in the woods!  Probably not *these* fancy fox, but still.

I think they look dapper.

I’m also participating in a really fun Birthday Bash Swap with Stephanie at Quarter Incher.  I’m the first recipient and it’s freaking FANTASTIC!  I’m blown away by the generosity. I’ll have a separate post with all of those goodies.

Let’s see, what else…

  • Just finished up a small project for Moda Bakeshop and have another to work on. I think they’ll be published in April.
  • My design wall is –blank–.  Woot!  Which quilt to make next? I have a few ideas.
  • I need to make the April Birthday Girl her present.
  • Need to quilt a top I made last year, that I’m just not feeling.
  • Oh!  I still need to make my Scrappy Trip blocks for my hive. Yikes
  • A wall flag thing for my brother…

The list goes on but I’ll stop there.

So what are you working on?  Did you anything fun for Spring Break?

GIVEAWAY! The Brooksider: A Quilted Duffel

by Julie Hirt

My first bag pattern, if you don’t count smaller pouches. I’m pretty excited!

brooksider

I was looking for a classic duffel (duffle? hey, I looked and either way is okay!) pattern and couldn’t find one I really liked.  So I decided to make my own and make it quilty.

There are strips running along the zipper to give it a little something.  The ribbon trim on the handles and ribbon pulls on the sides make me happy.

The inside is quilted with raw edges hidden away.

I have  few other bag ideas in my head and think I’ll stick to naming them with a Kansas City theme. “Brookside” is a neighborhood, which I love, in Kansas City.

All in all, I’m really happy with the bag and the pattern.   It feels solid and there is nothing flimsy about it.  Measures 22.5″ x 10″.

The pattern is heavily detailed with a picture for everything. My goal was to make it easy for a beginner to follow.

If you need zippers (this calls for a 22″),  Zipit has the largest, most affordable selection and you can save 15% at checkout using code: 627handworks.

Little Things

by Julie Hirt

It’s been a hodge podge of sewing projects lately.   Someone in Instagram (who are you?) was posting little baby booties and I had to make a pair.

627handworks Briar Rose baby booties (1) Fabrics are from the Heather Ross Briar Rose collection.  The interior is white flannel and the soles are flax cotton linen.

I have a new niece coming in a few months so I’ll put these aside for her.

The pattern is for reversible booties and it’s FREE!  You can download it here.

Curved piecing has always scared me so I decided I needed to practice.  After watching a tutorial from She Can Quilt, I gave it a go.

The squares are 3″ and after finishing the block I made a couple more and turned it into a pillow cover.

Grumpy Cat Pillow

by Julie Hirt

It’s Grumpy Cat!  I think he’s upset the background is purple. hehe

IMG_0755

The second I saw the pattern on Instagram, I bought it.  You can find the ‘Grouchy Cat’ paper piecing pattern here or here. Sew What Sherlock is a mad genius with this!

My cat has a teensy little mistake by his eye, but we’ll just ignore that.  This is the 18″ version and I added a 2″ border so I could make a pillow cover.

I’ve never paper pieced with such large pieces before, so it was a little interesting getting the angles for the fabric right.

This morning I turned my Scrap Medley blocks into a pillow cover.  You can purchase the pattern from my Craftsy store for a buck.

I’m determined to make 2014 a year of finishes for all of my WIP.

………. and I just got sidetracked for an hour looking at Grumpy Cat meme’s.

I don’t have a cat but I do have three dogs.  One of them really wanted in the pillow pics.

If you make a Grumpy Cat I must see it!

Sew Together Bag

by Julie Hirt

I’m going to start this off by saying I LOVE this bag!  It ranks up there with my Triple Zip and Weekender in the ‘bag love’ department.

627handworks Sew Together Bag (4)

It’s called the Sew Together Bag and you can purchase the pattern via SewDemented on Craftsy.

Personally, I think it should be renamed the Hold all the Things Bag.  I mean, take a look at the guts of this thing:

627handworks Sew Together Bag (1)

Heaven! I love pouches, zippers, scrapping together fabrics… everything about this bag is so fun.

627handworks Sew Together Bag (7)

The weight of it is nice, it’s pretty substantial with fusible fleece interfacing.

627handworks Sew Together Bag (2)

I’m going to use mine to store crochet hooks and tatting needles.  Over 30 hooks, a couple pairs of scissors, tubes of needles and still room for more.

627handworks Sew Together Bag (3)

Even after you zip the pouches there is plenty of space to store goodies.

627handworks Sew Together Bag (5)

My overall take on the Sew Together Bag pattern:  Get it, make it, love it. Make more.

When I first saw the price I was a little on the fence, but it’s totally worth it.  There are a couple of tricky spots, but I asked for help on Instagram and instantly had a few replies, even by SewDemented herself.  woot!

This is also my very first selvedge (salvage?) project.  Now I’m really happy I started saving them because it’s so fun to play with those little ends.
